Getting Juiced, Sans Steroids
Drinking fresh, cold-pressed juice from fruits, vegetables and wheatgrass is one of my favorite things in the world. Seriously. Ask anyone who’s accompanied me to a Jamba Juice and they’ll basically tell you that my reaction upon walking in is chemically similar to a crack addict who just scored a hit. I love it THAT MUCH. But juicing at home? As enjoyable as it sounds, it never seemed like something I’d be willing to shell out $400 for a machine that looks like a spaceship landed on my counter.
Enter the Healthy Juicer GP27 – Manual Wheatgrass Juicer. My at-home juicing savior.
$50 and I’m juicing everything with leaves and a stem. Oranges? Grapefruit? The kids won’t drink it from a carton or a bottle, but let them help you juice it and – presto! – all of the sudden the love it. One of our favorite things to make is a a stealthily healthy treat we call “Shrek Shakes.” Simply juice up some spinach and blend it in with some vanilla ice cream. The kids will be so distracted with the novelty of it, they won’t even realize the anitoxidants, iron and vitamin A sneaking into their systems. Victory! We even experimented with growing our own wheatgrass (a tip: don’t plant a lot, you won’t be able to use it all).
Clean up is easy, as most of the parts are dishwasher safe or easily washed by hand. Storage is a snap because the whole thing comes apart and can fit into a very small space. But what I really love about this juicer is that because its manual, the act of cranking it is a bonding experience for us and the kids. They get to see the process and mechanics behind how fruits and vegetables become juice. They get to be proud that they “made” their juice. They enjoy drinking it just a little bit more. And we like that, a lot.
